As big fans of the Norwegians, we thought it's about time to bring Bjørn Torske back to Finland. Coming from the west coast city of Bergen, Bjørn is one of the originators of electronic music in Norway and has been making music since the early Nineties. His discography includes releases on the classic imprints Svek and Ferox, as well as Smalltown Supersound, which just released his new single with much-touted DJ Harvey and Todd Terje remixes.

After that we went to play Koneisto in Helsinki which was a blast, hanging out with the Uusi Fantasia guys, Vilunki, Pepe and Ercola. Crazy times.

This Saturday sees David Vunk returning for the Nerd Network night. Last time the energetic, Rotterdam-based DJ guested in the booth at Nolla was in November 2009. Since then David Vunk has been busy DJing all over the world, from Panorama Bar to Medelin in Colombia. He has also started a new sub label to his Moustache Records, Moustache Techno. Its first release was named record of the year by the renowned Dutch record shop Clone. The musical profile of his new label is reflected in his renewed interest for house and techno, David tells me when I catch him for a chat after a live set on Intergalactic FM.

I just listened to your Mixmas-mix and enjoyed quite it a lot. You run a weekly show on Intergalactic FM, right?

	– Good to hear. That's right, the show is called Life is Live. I started out making mixes for CBS (Cybernetic Broadcasting System) in 2002 and when Intergalactic FM started I swapped to doing live shows for them. So for three years I've been doing this show non stop every Wednesday.

Apart from running your radio show, what other projects do you have lined up for 2012?

	– I will continue working with my labels Moustache Records and Moustache Techno. Last year I only released two records so this year I hope to put out four or five. There is a new Moustache twelve inch coming out in two weeks by Neurox. It's an italo, new wave thing from the '80s with two great new remixes by Flemming Dalum and Steen Gjerulff. An EP that I've produced myself will come out some time soon and I also want to put out another Gesloten Cirkel of course, since that was our big hit of 2011.

Can you tell me a little about your musical background and what has influenced you over the years?

	– Well, it all began with my stepfather who raised me since I was six. He had some number one hits here in Holland back in the days, really cool rock and funk tracks. I might even play something by him on Saturday. He plays the piano since forever and had a TR-909 and a few synthesizers that he let me play with when I was a kid. So I got inspired and wanted to make my own music and start a radio show.

	– Later on I started playing club music out. This was in the late '80s and in '92 I got into gabber music. I liked that stuff for a short while, then I got into techno, harder techno. During that period I played at a regular basis at a club called De Vlerk in Rotterdam, a really underground club. While I was mainly playing techno there I started to listen to electro more and more. With that came eventually an interest in disco and italo. I remember when I booked I-F to a club for the first time back in 1996. He played italo like Doctor's Cat and I thought, ”Wow, this is great!"

Was it I-F that introduced you to the italo revival?

	– Yes, but that was a year earlier when he played at Café De Hemel in Rotterdam. I had heard some italo tunes before that but I didn't really know that I liked it. It was after that, when I-F:s famous mix Mixed up in the Hague came out, that people really started rediscovering the italo sound in Holland.

How do you discover music these days? Are you a crate digger or a Youtube digger?

	– Both. When I listen to the radio and DJ mixes I often look up tracks on Youtube. I'm constantly searching for new music of course, so I go to record stores every week. Others sources are DJs who play at my show and at clubs, and my girlfriend (Slick Chick). I also go on vacation to Italy searching for records, driving all around the country and sleep at gas stations.

That sounds like an interesting adventure. So you're sticking to good old vinyl?

	– Well, I play CDs too. Many clubs don't have good turntables anymore and in some cases they don't have any at all. I always bring CDs just in case. I really like vinyl but only when the club is ready for it. If it's a serious club and their serious with the equipment, then it's fine.

You played at Nolla about two years ago. Should the crowd expect the same David Vunk coming back or has your sound changed since then?

	– I'm really looking forward to coming back! Yes, My DJ style has changed a little. Last time I only played disco and italo but nowadays my sets are more eclectic and housey too.

Do you have any particular favourite tracks right now that you plan to spin on Saturday?

	– Oh, there are a lots of them. I'm going to bring many secret treasures that I don't want to reveal but here are four favourites:

	Manhattan Project – That's Impossible

	Gesloten Cirkel – Insummer

As the weather gets gloomier, it's time to brighten it up with a former Café Del Mar resident. In addition to his sunset sets in Ibiza, Horse Meat Disco, Fabric and Harvey’s 39 Hotel in Honolulu are just a few of the places Phil Mison has played during his 20-year DJ career. The man is also known as a recording artist with his Cantoma and Reverso 68 projects, and just compiled the latest volume of the superb Originals series on Claremont 56.

The club scene has changed quite a lot since I first visited, I think it's a lot more corporate, brand orientated. I still have a great time when I visit, I don't think there's any right or wrong way of doing Ibiza, you just get drawn to the things where you're going to have a good time. Some have to be rare, but I think the main thing is just to select great music that's quite personal to you. I selected tunes that I've played somewhere along my DJ career, some I've discovered recently and I included one record that I've had since I was eight.

Known as one of France’s foremost electronic musicians, Joakim will play a DJ set at this Saturday's Beamhill 25th Anniversary After Party. His fourth album Nothing Gold was released in September and constant remix and production work keeps the guy busy in addition to running the Tigersushi label. We reached Joakim for a quick chat about his latest and forthcoming projects.

	– Well, there's always new things I want to try, otherwise what's the point in making a new album. My motivation is to try things. It's weird that when I know how to do something, I don't want to do it anymore, it's kind of masochistic I guess. This time I wanted to do something more pop, simple, with fewer but greater sounds. In a way I failed, because I think the album is not as simple as I wanted to, but it's always like that. What you would want to do always turns into something else when you're in the studio. That's also the beauty of it, when it escapes control.

But we also play a few "classics" like I Wish You Were Gone, Spiders... I'm quite excited with the new live formula, it seems like it's getting good reactions so far.

Athanassios Christos Macias, better known as Ata, started playing records in the late 80's. In the 90's, he established three labels – Ongaku Musik, Klang Elektronik and probably most notably Playhouse, which released classic albums and singles by Isolée, Ricardo Villalobos and Blaze to name but a few.

Besides Ata himself, DJ's playing at the 250-capacity venue include everyone from Villalobos to Seth Troxler and from Prins Thomas to Andrew Weatherall. The club has also a great label of its own called Live At Robert Johnson – H.R. Boss by Lauer released on the label is probably one of the most played records in Helsinki this year.

After experiencing the carnival Seuil created with Noze and dOP at Wilden Renate, Berlin earlier this year, we had to book the guy to play at Nolla. Born on Réunion, an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Seuil moved to Paris around the year 2000. There he went on with his work as a DJ at places like Rex and Nouveau Casino. A few years later, he started to play international gigs and release music on Circus Company, Moon Harbour, RaumMusik and his own label Eklo Music, an outlet for a group of close friends including dOP and Le Loup.

Then I moved to Paris in early 2000 and discovered new electronic music in the capital. I met all the French scene from Ark, Cabanne and Krikor to the Karat crew, who had a shop called Katapult, where I found my first Perlon record.

After discovering live sets from artists like Cabanne, Daniel Bell, Zip a.k.a. Dimbiman, I decided that I wanted to produce these kind of micro house grooves. It was around 2004 and at the same time, Alcachofa by Villalobos was released. Listening to this album, I really made my mind about the kind of electronic music I wanted to work on.

	– Actually, we became good friends before starting to make music together. When I met them here in Paris, they were quite unknown, Nicolas from Noze brought them on the scene. They didn't come from the same scene, but they got it, and they started to connect their world with this one.

This friday at Disco Obscura we have a legendary and underrated finnish DJ, architect and writer/reporter Jussi Kantonen who is one of the lucky people who has visited places like Paradise Garage and experienced the original nightlife of the disco era. Jussi is co-author of one of the most important histories of disco music titled "SATURDAY NIGHT FOREVER". Don’t miss out Jussi’s sleazy eurodisco set - think undercover agents performing stripteases for heavily armed hitmen in 1977, excess aftershave, illegal cigarettes and the loudest synths ever heard in Rome!

To start with, tell me something about your style of music?

It’s a mission for people like me to bring soundscapes of European exploitation films to the attention of the general public. That's stuff made in the 70s, not now. The 70s produced the best ever films and the best ever music, period. I’m only into European records, plus the occasional funky Japanese track. There was some good stuff coming out of America too but overall, their sound now sounds way too polished. Their synths aren't fuzzy enough and the chicks don't moan like they should.

How did you become a DJ?

Someone called and asked me to come over with a few records. They had a stripper in that restaurant but no band. I was very young then.

What were the best disco parties you attended during 70’s or 80’s?

I hated Studio 54, it was all poseurs and old people who could not dance. I did like Paradise Garage a lot but as the saying goes, Italians do it better. The most far out clubs were in Italy. Number one was Piranha in the town of Capri. They played extremely long records there like the whole Watch Out For The Boogie Man cut by Trax. Sorted out the wimps. During the 80's, everybody adored Les Bains Douches in Paris and Amnesia in Milan. Les Bains was a pretty incredible place with a totally unhinged music policy: italo, Yello, tropicalia and suddenly, an authentic flamenco track.

What has been your best gig so far?

I did a series of parties with dj extraordinaire Aicha of Paris at the Nouveau Casino a few years back. Hot summer nights, 600 people inside and 200 out trying to get in. Far be it from me to do anything but play music but at Le Casino, things got out of control. We performed half of the Missa Disco album on stage, complete with exorcisms and severe whippings, plus partial nudity. And we spinned the music LOUD.

What is your favourite movie soundtrack?

We got maestros Ennio Morricone, Nico Fidenco, Piero Umiliani and Stelvio Cipriani. I’d have to go with Nico Fidenco’s theme song for Emanuelle E Gli Ultimi Cannibali / Emanuelle And The Last Cannibals, from 1977 which is the year everything truly great came out. The title is “Make Love On The Wing” with vocals by Ulla Lander.

Your top 5 at the moment?

1. Squadra Speciale - I Romans (7”)
2. Culto De Amor - Grupo C (lp cut)
3. Sing - Corn Flakes (12”)
4. Sexy Love - Judy Preston (7”)
5. Femmes Plantes - Pierre Porte (lp cut)

What keeps you busy in life and what interests you besides music?

I’m an architect so I get to do a lot of cool stuff. And I watch films. Fuck Angelina Jolie, if you want to see a real actress at work check out Meiko Kaji. Or Edwige Fenech, especially in the ultrastylish giallos she made with Sergio Martino. The Case Of Bloody Iris, now THAT is a film.

There has been 29 Nerd Network nights at Nolla. Soon it’s time for the 30th. Over the 2 years and 2 months we’ve been acting as a club we have been very privileged to have been visited by some of the best disco dj’s that’s out there and we’ve had an amazing crowd over the 29 past times. After this Nerd Network night there will be some changes to the concept and the entire idea behind Nerd Network that you will see very shortly. However, this time we’ve been inviting one disco head and one person with the house disease. Since Albion doesn’t play house and I have difficulties seeing Tooli spinning Italian disco seven inches from 78 we decided to invite them both.

ALBION (Ambassadeur's Reception, Intergalactic FM /Stockholm)

Albion has been collecting disco for many years. He has one of the nicest continental disco collections in Europe. He's been playing the records out for several years which makes us happy. Since otherwise we would never hear them be played. A month of ago Albion released a new bunch of edits at the dutch Ambassador's reception label as well as a CD compilation. Especially the Leslie track on his new release makes everyone move their feets. Albion has compiled a top five list of his favorite tracks at the moment:

	1. Graffitti Kids - Running to my life
2. Michael Stone - Bravo New York
3. Mokka - Rock me Dracula
4. Zack Ferguson - Do the train
5. Daniel Grau - El leon bailarin

TOOLI (Local Talk Records, 24hrs / Stockholm)

Tooli aka Tobias Lidström has been visiting us before. Then as one half of 24hrs soundsystem, the Stockholmian party planners, promoters and DJ's. They played a very nice set when they were here in September 2010. Since then Tobias has started the hyped Local talk records together with the DJ legend and Raw Fusion founder Mad Mats. Local Talks releases are supported and played by the likes of DJ Harvey, Gilles Patterson and Joey Negro to name a few names you might recognize. Tobias has also been very kind of putting together a short top 5 list for us:

1-Opolopo present Actual Proof- Huff & Puff
2-CD vs CD - I Really Do Believe
3-Parkway Rhythm - Working Girl
4-Omar S feat Colonel Abrams -Who Wrote The Rules Of Love
5-The Persuader - What Is The Time, Mr Templar?
