After experiencing the carnival Seuil created with Noze and dOP at Wilden Renate, Berlin earlier this year, we had to book the guy to play at Nolla. Born on Réunion, an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Seuil moved to Paris around the year 2000. There he went on with his work as a DJ at places like Rex and Nouveau Casino. A few years later, he started to play international gigs and release music on Circus Company, Moon Harbour, RaumMusik and his own label Eklo Music, an outlet for a group of close friends including dOP and Le Loup.
Could you give us a brief introduction to your musical history – how did you start making music and DJing? Are there any people that have been particularly influential for you as a producer or a DJ during the years?
– I started DJing in the end of the 90's on my island, we used to rave in the woods or on the beach. Then I moved to Paris in early 2000 and discovered new electronic music in the capital. I met all the French scene from Ark, Cabanne and Krikor to the Karat crew, who had a shop called Katapult, where I found my first Perlon record.
After discovering live sets from artists like Cabanne, Daniel Bell, Zip a.k.a. Dimbiman, I decided that I wanted to produce these kind of micro house grooves. It was around 2004 and at the same time, Alcachofa by Villalobos was released. Listening to this album, I really made my mind about the kind of electronic music I wanted to work on.
Pantytec's Pony Slaystation album on Perlon was a big influence in my music too, as well as Daniel Bell. As a DJ, I was really into guys like Zip and Villalobos. I used to like long and deep sets, things you can build all along.
How did your collaboration with dOP come about? How was the creation process like?
– Actually, we became good friends before starting to make music together. When I met them here in Paris, they were quite unknown, Nicolas from Noze brought them on the scene. I remember in the beginning people weren't so hot on them, but I felt they definitely had something special. They didn't come from the same scene, but they got it, and they started to connect their world with this one.
At the same time, they released two big EPs on my label Eklo, so we use to see each other a lot in the studio. After some time, we began to produce some music together – first to have fun, then it turned into something concrete, and then we thought it deserved to be released.
How about when you're doing solo material – do you have a certain recurring method of working?
– I have lots of hardware stuff like MPCs, a 909, a SH-101, a K2000... and my main thing in the studio is my mixer, a Toft, which gives the identity to my music. If I don't come up with something special, I like to jam on the things, record stuff and then arrange everything in Logic or Pro Tools.
What's coming up next from you personally and the labels you are running?
– As Seuil, I have a new EP just out on Ultrastretch, Sammy Dee's label, with a great Baby Ford remix. Then there's a two-tracker on coming out on Hello Repeat, a label from Jan Krueger. For the end on the year, a new EP coming on Circus Company, featuring my dOP buddies.
I also have a new project with my friend Le Loup. It's a new label we just started called Hold Youth. The first EP is coming on vinyl only at the end of October. On my label Eklo, a new EP from Boris Horel with a Cabanne remix, and probably a new full Seuil EP too, as well as some music from my friends Le Loup, Shonky & Dario Zenker.
How would you describe your dream gig? Are there clubs where you always have a great time playing?
– It depends, sometimes it's great to play in small, packed 300-capacity club or for a big crowd like in DC10. A great soundsystem and people who are there because they like your music, that would be the most important for sure. There are clubs where it's always a blast, like Fabric, Panorama Bar and DC10.
