A product of Willesden, that’s how the London-based producer Gatto Fritto describes his unique take on dance music. Music journalists have called it a mixture between synth-pop, kraut and disco. It sounds amazing anyhow and that is one reason why he is guesting the Nerd Network night on Saturday. The other being his great DJ sets.
In April Ben Williams, as his real name is, released his acclaimed debut album on International Feel. The label is highly regarded among leftfield disco heads and is also the home of DJ Harvey’s Locussolus project and Ben’s other moniker Hungry Ghost.
Ben Williams is far from a newcomer in the dance music scene though. He has been releasing music since 2007 on the now defunct imprint Dissident as well as his own label Fritto Morto. He is also responsible for an atmospheric and hypnotic remix of Simplex by Subway that has blown many minds.
But he is guesting Nolla as a DJ to show us what has been influencing his music. When not producing and spinning records Ben has been working in second hand record shops. That shows in his DJ sets which prove an extensive knowledge of dance music. Listen to his set on Beats in Space from last week to get an idea of what he might play. It’s a blend of Chicago and Detroit-sounds that ends with some fine disco action. It should serve as a perfect appetizer for Saturday night.
