Nolla's first Saturday night guest of the year a comes from Paris and continues from where her friends Jennifer Cardini and Ivan Smagghe left off last year. Chloé Thevenin has produced a remarkable catalogue of music and made a reputation as an accomplished DJ with residencies in such Parisian clubs as Rex and Pulp. She's also running a label called Kill The DJ, which has released the works of Optimo, Battant, Joakim and In Flagranti among others. A friend from St. Petersburg, Timofey (Superlax) will join us for warm-up duties as well!
What has kept you busy lately in the studio?
– I'm doing a few remixes at the moment – for Polar on Marketing Music, Miss Kittin for her next album, Tomas More on Kill The DJ – and preparing some new tracks. I'm also producing some tracks for an artist called The Big Crunch Theory, who released her first album on Versatile (produced by Gilb'r). She's a great musician, it's very interesting to share moments in the studio with her!
How about Kill The DJ – can you reveal more of your plans for 2012?
– Battant is on tour in January and February all across the hexagon. We will release the first album of The Eyes In The Heat (a project by Oliver Ho a.k.a. Raudive & Zizi Kanaan). They make their first steps with the fantastic Amateur EP, to be released in the end of February. And we'll also release the album by George Issakidis, dirty and sweaty music.
In general, what are the qualities that make a track fitting for the label's catalogue?
– It's not a question of style, we release folk music, electronic, etc. It has to find a good balance between deepness, darkness and love.
Besides your solo work, you make music with Krikor as Plein Soleil. How did you end up working with him?
– We are good friends since many years. We were going to a music academy/conservatoire together in Paris for a few years, so it was really natural we ended making music together. At the moment we are working on our solo projects.
The year ended just a few days ago. What do you think were your three most played tracks of 2011?
Death In Vegas – Your Loft My Acid (Fearless Transhouse Mix Long)
– It's a very deep acid track, very psychedelic, I love it.
Agoria – Speechless feat. Carl Craig & La Scalars (Carl Craig Remix)
– It's a neverending track (13 minutes). I love the vibe of it.
Noir & Haze – Around (Solomun Vox Mix)
– I might be not very original by saying this, but that track was a real hit in all the underground clubs, so well produced. Always a pleasure to play it.
Any new artists or producers you've come across lately and gotten really excited about?
– Tomas More: he released an EP on Items & Things, and will release his next ep on Kill The DJ, I will make a remix of one of his tracks.
What factors make an ideal dj gig for you?
– I don't prefer a big or a small room, I like to play in both sizes, I need both of them. It's important there's a very good soundsystem, not too much light, and nice people of course.
Chloé DJ MIX (Get the Curse) by Chloe (DJ - Producer)
Besides the renowned Rex, what are your favourite clubs or parties in Paris at moment?
– It's difficult to say which club is great in Paris except Rex Club. I would say Showcase is very good too, especially as they have a brand new soundsystem and a cabinet. The line up has been amazing since a while.
