Dan Lissvik from Gothenburg, Sweden is one half of the band Studio, known for their brilliant debut West Coast, as well as numerous remixes for a diverse bunch of artists ranging from Kylie to Brennan Green. Lately, Lissvik has also done original material and remix work under his own name. Dan will play records at the Diana Orving Gallery & Installation After Party, presented by Nolla and Weekday on Saturday, 4th of September. We got in touch with him for a short interview.
It seems you are working mostly as a solo artist nowadays. Is there more material to be expected with Rasmus Hägg as Studio?
– We do some remixes from time to time, but I work mainly as a producer for other artists right now. Studio is on hold at the moment, but kept in consideration.
How about the remixes – there is a Lissvik remix of a Tiedye song coming out on the Jolly Jams label – any others to be released in the near future?
– Not sure about release dates but here's some: Steve Mason - Just A Man (Studio remix), Arp - Pastoral Symphony (Studio remix), Bear in Heaven - You Do You (Studio remix), Foals - Miami (Lissvik remix), James Yuill - First in Line (Lissvik remix) and Architeq - Odyssey (Lissvik remix).

Could you name some artists that have influenced you as a musician? Have someone's techniques especially influenced you as a producer?
– The Beatles, The Cure and Dr. Dre really made an impact to name a few. Right now I'm getting a Studer C37 (reel to reel tape recorder) fixed plus some AKG C24's (microphones), so I'm quite influenced by analog gearheads and old farts from the tube era at the moment. There is nothing more refreshing than to realize that you have much to learn!
Are you familiar with Finnish artists, any favorites?
– Can't say I know a lot about Finnish artists but I like And The Lefthanded, we played at the same festival in Tampere a couple of years ago.
Looking forward getting to know the scene though.
I read you're into yoga and meditation. When did you start practicing them? Do you think they have an effect on how your music ends up sounding?
– Well, not traditional meditation, but I started (actively) reconsidering my beliefs about reality sometime around 2006 due to a short out-of-body experience I had during that time. I guess making music and spending a lot of time out on the fringe served as catalyst for asking basic questions again (like you did naturally as a child). Ever since then, music has increasingly become some sort of a "dayjob"-thing that keeps me grounded and preventing me from going totally bonkers (some would probably argue the opposite).
Do you play DJ gigs often or are we talking about a special occasion here? What can we expect from the D.Lissvik set at Nolla?
– I sometimes play records in a bar (Kino) not far from my studio. Usually I play some new tracks and whatever comes to mind.
It seems one of Scandinavia's hottest summers in ages is now over (I guess it was exceptionally warm in Gothenburg too). Any song recommendations for reminiscing the tropical nights?
