Ivan Smagghe interview

In addition to his extensive touring all over the world, Ivan Smagghe has held residencies at Bugged Out, Fabric and Robert Johnson. Whether playing on his own or back to back with the likes of occasional partner-in-crime Andrew Weatherall, his sets have been described as genre-defying and visionary. Earlier as a member of Black Strobe and nowadays as half of It's A Fine Line, Ivan has been creating original material and remixing artists such as Superpitcher and The XX. We caught the London-based Frenchman for a quick chat right before his gig at Nolla on Saturday.

Ata (Robert Johnson) at Nolla this Saturday

This Saturday Nolla's decks are taken over by a rather influential character. Athanassios Christos Macias, better known as Ata, started playing records in the late 80's. In the 90's, he established three labels – Ongaku Musik, Klang Elektronik and probably most notably Playhouse, which released classic albums and singles by Isolée, Ricardo Villalobos and Blaze to name but a few.

For more than a decade, he has been running a club called Robert Johnson by the river Main in Frankfurt. Besides Ata himself, DJ's playing at the 250-capacity venue include everyone from Villalobos to Seth Troxler and from Prins Thomas to Andrew Weatherall. The club has also a great label of its own called Live At Robert Johnson – H.R. Boss by Lauer released on the label is probably one of the most played records in Helsinki this year.
